Grasse and The History of Perfume.

In ancient Rome, it was customary to bathe guests’ feet in scented basins and offer garlands of flowers, clove oil, or flavored wines. Known as “the capital of perfume,” Rome boosted the trade of aromatic plants. Figures like Nero famously used excessive perfume to mask the scents of his extravagant parties. The Romans also explored the medicinal benefits of aromatic substances and introduced glass containers for storing them.
Interactions with the Etruscans and Phoenicians enriched Roman perfumery knowledge, making fragrances central to important ceremonies like weddings and funerals. Later, Arabs, building on Greek chemistry, became leaders in the spice and perfume trade.
In 1555, Venice published the first European treatise on perfumery. By the mid-18th century, Grasse, originally known for scented gloves, had become the World Capital of Perfumery. Tanners shifted their focus from gloves to perfumes, making full use of the region’s aromatic essences. Today, Grasse is celebrated for luxury perfumes, pharmaceutical fragrances, and cleaning products, with its traditional perfumery knowledge carefully passed down through generations. The delicate process of turning raw materials into exquisite scents often still takes place in Grasse.
