Perfumes of Grasse

Grasse and The History of Perfume.

Grasse, the world capital of the perfumery

In ancient Rome, it was customary to bathe guests’ feet in scented basins and offer garlands of flowers, oil of cloves, or flavored wines. Known as “the capital of perfume,” Rome boosted the trade of aromatic plants, with figures like Nero using excessive perfume to mask the scents of his extravagant parties. The Romans explored medicinal benefits of aromatic substances and introduced glass containers.

Their interactions with the Etruscans and Phoenicians enriched their knowledge of perfumery, leading to its widespread use in important ceremonies like weddings and funerals. Arabs, learning from Greek chemistry, became leaders in the spice and perfume trade.

In 1555, Venice saw the publication of the first European treatise on perfumery. Grasse, initially known for its scented gloves, became the World Capital of Perfumery in the mid-18th century as tanners shifted focus from gloves to perfumes, utilizing the region’s aromatic essences.

Today, Grasse is renowned for luxury perfumes, pharmaceutical fragrances, and cleaning products, with its traditional knowledge passed down through generations. The delicate process of transforming raw materials into scents often takes place in Grasse.
