Grasse and The History of Perfume.

In ancient Rome, it was customary to bathe guests’ feet in scented basins and offer garlands of flowers, oil of cloves, or flavored wines. Known as “the capital of perfume,” Rome boosted the trade of aromatic plants, with figures like Nero using excessive perfume to mask the scents of his extravagant parties.
